This is good work - I think it is reasonable to delay the 1.9.0 release
a little bit longer to merge this work

The 1.9.0 release should probably be timed for the next releases of
Fedora and Ubuntu, I think we will still have time for that.  The next
Debian freeze won't start until late next year.
