[reSIProcate] Google Summer of Code - mentors needed
As part of the Debian application to participate in GSoC 2013, I've
proposed a subject area for RTC projects:
http://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2013/Projects#Enabling_free_multimedia_real-time_communications_.28RTC.29_with_Debian
(You don't need to be using Debian to be able to help here)
Debian's involvement has now been confirmed by Google and this means
that we can speak to students and help them define a possible project.
Debian will make a short list for final approval by Google
There are two opportunities here for the reSIProcate community:
a) helping to mentor a student in the GSoC program
b) any students not selected by Google may still be willing to work
during the summer if anybody else has vacancies for them (Google
typically pays them $5,000)
For a student to be endorsed by Debian, their project needs to have
direct benefit for a Debian system (e.g. improving integration between
different SIP/RTC packages in Debian). It doesn't have to be
exclusively for Debian though.
As part of the screening process, most projects are asking students to
show a history of open source collaboration (e.g. a Sourceforge or
Github profile) or perform trivial coding tasks (e.g. writing a unit test)
I'd really appreciate feedback from anybody else who may want to be
involved, you don't need to do everything, any one of the following may
help:
- proposing tests for the prospective students and putting them on a
wiki page
- promoting the project to students through other forums
- reviewing their project ideas and test contributions, helping with the
selection process
- helping as a co-mentor

Daniel
