Just to clarify: there has not been any decision to dump autotools
It is just a topic for discussion and to get input from people
The wiki page covers some of the CMake benefits, but
a) it is not the only option - the status quo remains a valid choice and
has served us well for purposes such as packaging
b) CMake also has disadvantages (it is not some magic solution to all
problems we have with autotools)
c) even if somebody volunteers to do the conversion, there is still some
overhead for everybody else too and that may be too high a price to pay
The discussion and planning phase could well provide input to improve
the autotools build system
