I hate to sound pessimistic, but that's a really small machine these  
days.
I usually configure machines with at least 2x the physical memory.
One thing to try would be to monitor the free RAM in another window  
while you build resiprocate.

'top' would work, or 'vmstat 1'

Watch to see if your memory drops dangerously low right before the  
crash.
