This usually happens when you have not run the autotools properly.
There are two ways to build. Jason can provide details on the 'default'
build method, which does NOT use the Makefile.am files as far as I
know.
The 'autotools' build method -- still under development; uses the
'use-autotools.sh' script and the 'autogen.sh' scripts.
