Well, I haven't had a PROPFIND since I switched to https, so that seems to
be the way to go.

Since you have to use https for checking in anyway, if you have write
access and plan to check in from a working copy, it makes sense to just
use that for the checkout (the url is cached, so you won't need to enter
it).
